Erin Morgenstern’s, The Night Circus has received an extortionate amount of attention over the past several months. Her simple prose and stylistic storytelling seem to have captured the imagination of many a reader. I was instantly interested upon hearing the premise of the book but couldn’t imagine what about it lent itself it such mass appeal. As I began reading I found an enjoyable magical mystery. It was pleasant enough and pleasingly set out but It didn’t grab me the way I expected it to. As I read on I learnt that I really had to be in the right mood for this type of slow paced, fast wits book.It took more than half the story for me to find a clear emotional connection to the characters and even then I found I was much more invested and interested in the secondary characters rather than our main protagonists, Celia and Marcus. For anyone yet to read The Night Circus I feel it’s best to go in to this type of story blind but I will tell you what the cover of the book tells you and that is this. The Night Circus is a magical circus that appears in the night. No one sees it arrive and no one sees it leave. The plot revolves around this circus and two rival magicians and the competition they have no control over. While I ended up enjoying this book a great deal I would have preferred some greater risks on Morgenstern's part. I feel the book was leading up to a climax that never came. That having been said I would still recommend this to quite a wide audience and I think it’s the type of book that will benefit from a reread one of these days.
